Ask a room to name a favourite ending and you get confident answers fast. Ask for a favourite opening shot and the room slows down — openings do quieter work, and naming what they do requires actually remembering how it felt to not yet know the film.
The picks that came back most often shared a habit: they withheld a face. A hand, a doorway, a road seen from inside a moving car — the person the film is about arrives a beat after the frame does, and that lag is doing more work than any line of dialogue could.
A good opening shot is a promise. Most films spend the rest of the runtime trying to keep it.
