The doorway that never quite opens

A recurring composition across three unrelated films this year, and what it borrows from waiting rooms rather than thresholds.

The doorway that never quite opens

A doorway in a frame usually means one thing: someone is about to cross it. This year, across otherwise unrelated films, a specific variation kept showing up — the doorway held in frame for several seconds too long, the crossing implied but withheld, the character left standing in the gap.

It reads less like a threshold than a waiting room. The decision has already been made off-screen; what we are watching is the delay between deciding and doing, which is a harder thing to film than either the decision or the action, and rarer to see done well.

Where it comes from

The lineage is more theatre than cinema — a held beat before an exit, borrowed by directors who trained on stage before they trained on set. It shows.
